Sure, tens of thousands of Muslims may die but they would die a glorious death as martyrs so it is an occasion for rejoicing. Is this just so much hot air? Will no such thing happen? We do not know, do we? So how do we act? Do we pretend not to hear any of this? Do we regard it automatically as rhetorical hyperbole and downgrade its importance? Or do we take it very seriously indeed and, running worst case scenarios, determine that we must act before the threat is actualized? This matter becomes ever more fraught in situations of dramatic uncertainty of the sort that pertains as of this writing – the summer of 2012.

Judgments must be made in the absence of transparent, unassailable evidence. Evidence is interpreted; intelligence is gathered. There is, at present, general concurrence that the bellicose Iranian regime is moving at break-neck speed to develop useable nuclear weapons and the capacity to deliver them. The regime, in the person of its inflamed president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has already issued threats based on the presupposition that Iran will have functioning nuclear weapons in the near term.
